Personalized items can be powerful or cringeworthy—and one woman has taken the cringe to a whole new level.
A video on TikTok posted by @ilovemosleyandkit has gone viral after revealing her view while she prepared for her evening ablution: a shower curtain containing a blown-up portrait of her best friend’s face. Since the clip was posted on August 15, it has received over 8.2 million views and more than 1.5 million likes.
“POV [point of view]: I’m showering before bed, but my shower curtain is just my best friend’s face,” the creator captioned the video, which begins pointed at the floor before panning up to the imposing shower curtain.
People in the comments immediately started tagging their loved ones and friends to let them know what they were receiving for the next gift-giving holiday.
“[Be right back], getting this for our family my bathroom,” @josiegacau wrote. “My husband is gonna hate it.”
But not everyone was convinced: “Nah, I’d wake up in the night and forget then accidentally get scared or something,” @mckennaxgale_ posted.
In the comments, the creator revealed the curtain was from Amazon, helping the majority of commenters who were onboard with the alarming gift.
The creator’s reveal of a highly personalized, mildly shocking décor item echoes similar social-media moments. The art of the customized gift is represented far and wide on TikTok.
One video that went viral in July revealed the personalized towel one woman carried around with her on holiday when she missed her dog too much, featuring a blown-up image of her cocker spaniel’s face.
Another clip, popular in May, gained attention on TikTok when a woman’s husband surprised her at work with a T-shirt he was wearing—with her face all over it.
People shared their own instances of receiving customized gifts, signaling that @ilovemosleyandkit and the creators of these viral videos may be contributing to a gaudy personalized gift comeback.
“My partner gave me a pair of boxers with her face all over them for our anniversary years ago. I’m still so excited when I get to wear them,” @marxbro4521 wrote.
“My husband showed up with one on our anniversary,” @renee_bowen posted. “He wears it everywhere.”
“I told my hubby he reminds me of Jeff Goldblum, so for my birthday he got himself a shirt with Jeff’s face to wear and I love it,” @kimberleysewell2 commented.
